Marin County is a paradise for the modern and mid-century modern home enthusiast. Whether you are looking for an authentic mid-century property or a contemporary modern design home, you are bound to find something that pleases. Marin has the reputation of being an expensive place to live; however, affordable places are still available, particularly if you are willing to invest a little time and effort into sprucing up an older home. You might want to consider that a 3-4 bedroom single-family home in Marin can be had for about the same price as a nice 1 or 2 bedroom loft in San Francisco.
Architecture in South Marin has a sophisticated edge to it, particularly in Sausalito, Belvedere, and Tiburon. It is here that you will find some of the finest examples of the modern movement, including designs by such mid-century icons as Joseph Esherick, Mario Corbett, Aaron Green, Jack Hillmer, and Roger Lee. The homes are sleek and elegant, offering stunning views and a gracious lifestyle. Mill Valley has a different feel than the other South Marin communities - perhaps a little less glitzy, but with a fashionable rustic air. It is here that you'll find modern homes designed by the likes of Raphael Soriano, John Bolles, Francis Joseph McCarthy, and Claude Oakland. Strawberry Point in Mill Valley is home to a small, exclusive Eichler development.
Central Marin's more suburban roots are reflected in its homes. That being said, it has some of the most varied and interesting residential architecture in Marin. Many neighborhoods are fairly typical of affluent communities, with grand, traditional homes; but modern and mid-century modern design can be found as well. Although modern can be hard to come by in Larkspur, Fairfax, and Corte Madera; you might have some luck in Greenbrae or Ross - but your real fortune will come when you look at the impressive examples of mid-century modern homes in San Anselmo, Kentfield, and San Rafael. With designers and builders like William Wurster, Aaron Green, Ed Hageman, Joseph Eichler, and Alliance Homes building large tracts as well as custom designed homes, there are lots of choices to be had.
Heading into West Marin will find a hit or miss situation with regard to modern and mid-century architecture. That isn't to suggest, however, that you can't find a superb home. Jack Hillmer designed one of the original homes in Inverness, and Stinson Beach has loads of modern style homes. These coastal communities have a northern California feel to them, while the inland communities have their own distinct style. In Woodacre and San Geronimo you can find cozy cabins with traditional floor plans. Nicasio, with its wide opened land and rolling hills provides more of a ranch environment, on a grand scale. What all these communities have to offer, however, is contemporary modern design in both new construction and remodels. Jerry Kler and Sim Van der Ryn are two architects of distinction whose work can be found in Muir Beach. Architect Jon Fernandez is local to the Point Reyes / Tomales Bay area and is becoming well known for his work as well.
Novato, which is the only city in what is defined as North Marin, is an up and coming presence. It has long had some interesting commercial design - notably the Buck Center for Aging (designed by Pei Cobb and Associates) and the Googie style building that was home to Birkenstock USA for many years. There are also a couple of old and tired mid-century modern tract developments, including one built by Cliff May and another by Anshen and Allen in Novato. Unfortunately, most of these neighborhoods are in need of care and restoration - but to look on the bright side, with a little TLC they may be up and coming mid-century modern neighborhoods.
