Romance comes from the root word, ‘Roman' and refers to something that has a lost and beautiful past. Think of the hundreds of couples who marry each year in old farmhouses, weathered estates, stately mansions and beautiful gardens. What do these places have in common; a rich history with a storied past, a place that invites love and day dreaming.

Walk up Spring Grove and you will find a West End architectural jewel with a history.  It is an elegant Tudor Revival home built in the mid-1930's by Thomas & Mina Feeley of San Francisco on almost 3 acres of undeveloped forest.  Today, what was once a hunting lodge seems out of place among the newer wood sided homes built in the 1980's.

In 1940 the Motzer family, who owned a chain of bakeries in San Francisco, purchased the home from the Feeley's as a hunting lodge and for entertaining. Fred Motzer had elaborate brick ovens built which are still standing today.  He also built a swimming pool in a clearing at the far end of the property.

Torrential rains in 1949 sent water and debris down the hill onto the Motzer's property resulting in a

As a kid, former San Rafael West End neighbor, Karen Russcher, filled her wagon with vegetables from the family garden and sold them to the neighbors.  On a lark, she decided to turn a large portion of her under-utilized backyard into an urban garden, planting tomatoes, corn, peppers, zucchini and chilies to compliment the fruit trees that were already there.

When Karen, a licensed landscape architect, found herself out of work due to the economy, it didn't take her long to get creative.  She opened her neighborhood farmer's market, and received a welcoming response from the neighbors, bikers and passers-by. marin_eichler_home_update_500

With the first 6 months of 2012 behind us, I wanted to provide fellow Marin Eichler homeowners & prospective Eichler Home Buyers with a mid-year update on the market for Eichler homes in Marin County.

A total of 27 Eichler homes were sold in Marin between January 1 and June 30, 2012.   Taking a closer look at Eichler sales for the first half of the year, the majority (24) of sales occurred in San Rafael where Eichlers took an average of 78 days to sell at an average sale price of $728,279 (97% of the original list price).  Importantly though, this average sale price was skewed almost $50,000 downward because of one home in the Terra Linda South neighborhood which was listed and sold for just $400,000.  This was the lowest sale price for an
