Mill Valley has once again stepped up its effort to promote green, sustainable living. Several recent initiatives have been implemented which have received both local and national media attention as the town of Mill Valley encourages its employees, residents, and visitors to 'go green' in Marin County.
Mill Valley Green Initiatives
The town of Mill Valley is to be commended for their progressive approach to "going green" which include:
- Hiring a Sustainability Coordinator. Earlier this year, Mill Valley hired Carol Misseldine, a sustainability expert to help advance Mill Valley's environmental efforts. As Mill Valley's Sustainability Coordinator, Carol Misseldine will work with Mill Valley residents and officials on how best to address global warming, plastic waste and fossil fuel use in the town of Mill Valley. Mill Valley was the first town in Marin to hire and fund a Sustainability Coordinator.
- Creating a Green Building Ordinance for Mill Valley. The Mill Valley Planning Commission recently approved a green building ordinance which would add environmental requirements for residential and commercial developments (including remodels).
- Requiring Mill Valley City Employees to attend a 1.5 hour briefing on sustainability issues. These briefings include a review of fundamental sustainability principles and how employees can help apply sustainability principles to Mill Valley operations.
- Banning bottled water in Mill Valley city offices.
- Piloting energy-efficient, LED Streetlights in Mill Valley. Mill Valley recently became the first city in Marin County to test LED streetlights which can reduce energy costs as much as 60%.
