It's not like me to write a personal post, but in this case, the subject of electric vehicles and charging stations in Marin is important to many of my clients and future clients, so why not?! I have seen several electric cars around Marin and always wondered where they charged up on the go... If you are considering the purchase of a home in Marin and have an electric vehicle or are considering buying one, you may want to know that answer as well.

So are there any public charging stations in Marin? The first time I heard this question from a client a couple of years ago, I didn't know the answer. Now, as owners of a new Nissan Leaf, the all-electric vehicle that hopes to take the American EV market by storm, we are learning all kinds of exciting developments that the State of California as well as Marin County and cities such as San Rafael are supporting alongside private investment. Here is the latest information I have discovered:

Current Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Marin:

  • San Rafael - 2 stations located in the public parking garage on C Street

Planned Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Marin:

  • San Rafael (4 additional stations planned for San Rafael)
  • Novato
  • Corte Madera
  • Larkspur
  • San Anselmo
  • Belvedere
  • Fairfax

Coulomb Technologies of Campbell received state and federal grants to install many of these stations. It seems contagious. Green businesses are getting on board as well, I noted that Inn Marin located in the Ignacio area of Novato announced a couple of weeks ago that they had installed one charging station and may look to install another. Maybe a Marin Modern charging station is in our future?

What about the car? We'll save the car review for someone else, but I can say that it's cooler than I thought in black, and my 6 yr old son gets a big kick out of the fact the seats are made out of recycled water bottles. Check out this review. I'll let my  husband (the geek) drive the Leaf regularly for now for a green commute to Emeryville, and I'll stick with the Toyota Prius until all those other public charging stations are in place. And you can be sure I'll know all the latest in installing charging stations in homes soon. I'll blog about that when I have all the details.

These appear to be 220v stations. Very useful, but they are not "quick charge" 440v DC, and so will take some time (maybe a couple of hours) to bring a Leaf battery up by any significant amount.
If you work in San Rafael, and park in this garage, or if you just need to "top up" your battery, it's perfect. I would like to see a quick charge station added for those who are just passing through and only have 30 minutes to get a coffee and a bagel and move on...
