West End neighbors, Helen Stanley and Lori Davis teamed up to create signs for the Davidson Middle School Garden Club.  Built in 2005 by the San Rafael Harbor Rotary Club, P.E. teacher Leilani Siri started the Garden Club to teach kids where their food comes from and to promote healthy eating.  Lori Davis, the Director of Environmental Education with LIFT-Levantate wrote a grant for $2500 to build an outdoor kitchen in the garden. Together Leilani, Lori and partners such as Kaiser, Whole Foods, San Rafael Harbor Rotary and others,  have created an outstanding teaching opportunity for students and teachers at Davidson Middle School.

Back to the signs!  Lori asked Helen whose Art Studio is near Davidson, if she would paint

Olompali State Historic Park

It is embarrassing. After living in the lovely City of Novato for many, many years my family and I finally took the time to visit a Novato treasure - Olompali Park. What encouraged me to get in my car and drive the seven minutes is the new, safer entrance from Redwood Blvd. instead of the hair-raising turn-off from Hwy 101.

The 700-acre park is an interpretive and educational center that accommodates all visitors. We had our 3-month-old in a stroller and maneuvered quite well; many paths are flat. There are hiking and horseback riding trails, shaded picnic tables and a Miwok Village. For the serious hiker, you can climb Mount Burdell, about an eight-mile round trip.

Thinking about a new bike for you or your child? Don't want to spend a fortune? I'm  going to share with you a great place to buy a used bike, save a lot of money and help out others at the same time.

My eight year old finally out grew his first bike and just when I was ready to purchase a new one, a friend of mine reminded me about the little bike store under the freeway- it is the Re- Cylery Bike Thrift Shop at 610 4th St. in downtown San Rafael.

My husband took our son there and they found the perfect bike at a great price. Coincidentally, one of my husband's co-workers and one of his clients also work at the shop restoring the used bikes to excellent condition.  The Re-Cyclery is more than just a bike store; working to keep bicycles out of

Having trouble refinancing? The government run HARP program may be just what you’ve been looking for. In this era of tough lending restrictions, many independently employed home owners are having a difficult time passing the muster to refinance their home with conventional lenders.

As an independent contractor myself, I took advantage of this program 2 years ago and it took me 20 minutes to answer the questions over the phone with my then current lender, and be put into the HARP program. It was the easiest refinance I had ever done.

This program will be available until the end of 2015 so this might be the time to look into it, with rates at historical lows. Here is the link to the government site that discusses all the
