Downtown Tiburon is situated at the ocean's edge, and is packed with charming international restaurants, fancy shops, and outdoor bars. There is also a small shopping center, called The Cove, in the Bel Aire neighborhood. Local residents enjoy quick access to San Francisco, and undeveloped Angel Island State Park, via ferries from downtown Tiburon.
Tiburon's name comes from an unlikely source. It's the Spanish word for "shark," used by Lt. Juan Manuel de Ayala when he anchored the San Carlos here in August 1775. Whether de Ayala saw a number of sharks here, or thought the tree-covered Tiburon Peninsula resembled a shark is unknown.
