Sausalito Modern & Mid-Century Modern Homes
Sausalito is the closest town in Marin to San Francisco and begins right at the end of the famous Golden Gate Bridge. Somehow all of the urban sprawl of this area has maintained a small town charm although the hill it rests on has been developed in every nook and cranny. With its picturesque setting and hilly terrain, Sausalito is the perfect location for a modern (and sturdy!) home which can offer breathtaking views of San Francisco, Belvedere, Tiburon, Strawberry, San Pablo, Richardson Bay, Angel Island and the local marina and yacht harbors below.
While the views can be magnificant, a common tradeoff in Sausalito is yard space due to the smaller lot sizes and vertical orientation of most homes. For many in Sausalito, yardspace and its required maintenace is glady traded for a rooftop deck or private terrace which can provide for safe and unobstructed views of the scenery below while entertaining guests or happily relaxing with a glass of wine.
Famous modernist architects such as Mario Corbett, James Leefe, John Davis, Roger Lee, and many more have built custom homes in Sausalito. Recently an old Roger Lee home located in the hills of the Banana Belt area of Sausalito was re-done by Swatt Architects, a Bay Area architectural firm.
Another popular place for modern design nowadays is the area above the 101 Freeway called Wolfback Ridge. This area lends itself to breathtaking 360 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, the San Francisco Bay, Marin Headlands, Mount Tamalpais (the sleeping maiden), and San Francisco. You may need that handy GPS in order to figure out how to get to up there. Homes can be seen in the distance by thousands every day as they drive along the 101 and look up and think "How in the world do you get up there?". The residents would like to keep it that way so don't look for any prominent signs leading to those cool and stylistic homes.
