Larkspur Modern & Mid-Century Modern Homes
Larkspur is a sleeper town that is the ultimate cool. Most think of Mill Valley as being the "in" place to live, but Larkspur has its own following; perhaps not the same crowd that gravitates to Mill Valley, but an interesting crowd nonetheless. Larkspur has a neighborhood feel similar to the San Francisco districts of Cole Valley, West Portal, and the Lake District. There are local favorite restaurants, a French bakery, hip - but not trendy - clothing stores, a local dive bar, and even a church, all of which line the downtown strip on Magnolia Avenue.
While exploring Larkspur real estate, you will find several mid-century modern homes up on Palm Hill, and a few on the western hills surrounding Larkspur. Many of these homes have incredible views and are extra special because, for some reason, the mid-century architects did not design many homes in Larkspur. Most of the homes in the area would be considered Craftsman, Victorian, Art Deco, or Mediterranean.
Although the mid-century modern homes in Larkspur are hard to come by, there are many lovely contemporary homes in the area. Local architect Jared Polsky, of Polsky & Perlstein, designed a home in the Madrone Canyon neighborhood in collaboration with its owner. This home created quite a stir among the neighbors during the beginning phases of construction; many felt it did not fit into the more traditional look of the neighborhood. As you enter the sleek front gate, you are greeted by tall stalks of black bamboo set amongst a decomposed granite landscape. The house itself is a smart rectangular shape, with a graceful spiral staircase as its focal point. The house, which recently changed owners, is jaw-dropping - to say the least.
Remodeling is an option for gaining a sleek, one of a kind look for an existing home. Recently Lundberg Design, a San Francisco firm that specializes in high-end modern design, did the remodel of a traditional home, turning a basic spec-house into a work of art. By using elements of steel and glass the architect created a very unique and dramatic space as an entry point to the home. This greenhouse style room serves as an entry "lantern" that sets the tone for the rest of the house.
Not too long ago, Schwartz and Architecture designed a modern home in Larkspur. While consciously maintaining the inherent qualities of the original 1950's California-Ranch home, they incorporated some contemporary design elements, resulting in a fresh look to an old style. Clever use of space by overlapping small living areas maximized square footage and updated the design with interesting planes and lines.
If you are looking for mid-century modern house in Larkspur, you might have a long wait until one comes up for sale. However, a remodel is always an option and a "run-of-the-mill" home (if there is such a thing in Marin…) can be turned into an elegantly stylish modern design, custom built to suit your needs.
