Greenbrae Real Estate
Developed on what was once an old dairy ranch, Greenbrae was named for the lush green hills – brae is Scottish for hill – that surround the area. As its name suggests, much of Greenbrae is hilly; beyond that, Greenbrae is a community that is difficult to define. This residential neighborhood borders Larkspur, Kentfield and San Rafael, but the boundaries are a bit unclear. Its zip code is served by the post office in San Rafael. The Greenbrae bike trail meanders into Kentfield, and the Greenbrae Boardwalk wanders into Larkspur. Perplexing? Perhaps. Even city planners have confessed to some confusion. In the long run, however, it doesn’t really matter. Greenbrae is what it is – a lovely area surrounded by oak covered hillsides.
Distance to Golden Gate Bridge / San Francisco: 11-14 miles
Greenbrae is centrally located, near all the necessary conveniences of modern life. Only 5 minutes from the San Rafael Bridge, making a handy commute for people working in the east bay, it is also just minutes away from the Larkspur ferry to San Francisco. The neighborhood shopping center, Bon Air, is a hub for central Marin shopping and has a full compliment of services including restaurants, apparel, gift and specialty shops, banking services, gas stations, and an excellent market. Marin General Hospital, the county’s larges medical facility, is also located in Greenbrae.
Greenbrae has some beautifully wooded lots and gracious homesites, the result of a conscious effort to preserve the lovely oaks growing on the hillsides. There are a few homes on the level streets close to Sir Frances Drake Boulevard, however the majority of the homes are set in the hills, which affords some great views of Mount Tam or the bay.
